Heavenly Star Bread
Soft bread filled with herbs, garlic and butter
Equipment
- KitchenAid Stand Mixer
- Rolling pin
- Sharp knife
- Baking paper
Ingredients
- 300 grams all-purpose flour
- 60 grams unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 3 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teasoon salt
- 10 grams black carrot powder
- 15 ml milk

- 70 grams mixed fresh herbs
- 125 grams unsalted butter
- 20 grams garlic minced
- 100 grams grated cheese
Instructions
- Heat the milk until luke warm (about 40 degrees). Place the yeast and sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer (or a regular bowl). Pour the warm milk on top of the yeast mixture and whisk gently to combine. Loosely cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and allow to sit for about 5-10 minutes for the mixture to become frothy.
- Add the butter, flour, egg and salt to the bowl and beat on low speed for about 3 minutes. Lightly flour your hands and form the dough into a ball. The dough should be very soft. But in case it is too sticky to handle add some extra flour. If you do not have a stand mixer, simply use your hands.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap or aluminium foil or a kitchen towel. Place in a slightly warm environment in order to let it rise until it is doubled in size. This will take about 60-90 minutes.
- Punch the dough to release the air. Divide it into 2 equal pieces. Add the black carrot powder to 1 piece and mix it well untill you get the beautiful color you are aiming for. Let it rest for approximately 10 minutes.
- Prepare the filling. Cut the herbs, soften the butter and combine it.
- Now it's time to assemble the bread. Place the colored dough on a lightly floured work surface. Divide into 2 equal pieces and roll each out into a thin circle. Put one circle on a baking sheet with parchment paper. Top with 1/3 of the filling. Spread some grated cheese over it. Now divide the uncolored dough into 2 equal pieces and roll each out into a thin circle. Now place one uncolored circle on top of the filling. Top with 1/3 of the filling and spread some grated cheese over it. Repeat this first with the final colored circle and finally with the uncolored circle. The top layer does not have filling on it.Place a cup or small bowl in the center of the circle and make an indent. This will be the center of the star.Now cut strips from the edge to the center. It should be 16 even strips.Using both hand, grab two strips and twist them away from each other twice. Then press the ends together to make a point. The star bread will have 8 points.
- Cover the bread again and let rest for about 20 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 177 degrees celsius
- Lightly brush the star bread with a mixture of 1 egg with 15 ml of milk. This will ensure a beauriful and shiny golden brown star bread. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, depending on your oven, until golden brown. Remove from the oven and please be patient to allow it to cool for a couple of minutes.
